英文摘要
Almost everything we do today, including you reading this right now, involves a Data Centre (DC). As a result, DCs will consume 10% of TOTAL global electricity by 2030, producing 1.8Gt CO2 p.a., far more than aviation (Shift,2022). Because they generate vast amounts of heat, 40% of their energy is used for cooling, with heat expelled into the atmosphere (Clarke Energy). Capturing this heat represents a significant opportunity for the sector to increase efficiency, reduce costs and generate new revenue streams. Meanwhile, the UK is enduring an acute energy crisis, with average bills increasing by \>100% in 2022\. Urgent solutions are needed to increase home energy efficiency but costs remain prohibitive.Addressing both issues, Bit Warmer (trading as 'heata') has developed a disruptive technology that reimagines the DC as a network of distributed cloud-computing nodes inside people's homes. heata units are fitted onto domestic water cylinders via a thermal contact plate and wired into the immersion spur to heat water (using a British Gas-approved, 'no-plumbing' process). Using broadband, each unit connects into our network, and using proprietary software, BW accesses this network to run cloud services, using the resulting heat to warm the water in the cylinder. By using energy 'twice' (once for processing, once for heating), we deliver a step-change in compute efficiency while reducing energy bills by up to £450 per year per household.heata is on the journey to becoming a SAP-accredited energy efficiency measure, having been working alongside the BRE for the last year. This project would enable us to continue this work to submit our final application next year, in tandem with investigating our requirements under PAS 2030/35\.
