This study considers a novel approach to allow the resolution of 2D microLED arrays to be increased. The aim is to permit high-brightness microLED devices suitable for use as the light engines in future near-to-eye display systems to be developed. The proposed approach uses novel GaN processing techniques for current confinement and novel etched structures to increase light extraction efficiency. A successful outcome would allow mLED to develop in the short term,monochrome microLED devices suitable for use in the fast growing near-to-eye market.
