MicroCoat technology is a pharmaceutical manufacturing process for the production of small drug particles individually surrounded by a membrane that provides a barrier to drug release. MicroCoat is used to mask the taste of drugs, to enhance the stability of medicines, and to delay the release of the active ingredients, for example when medicines irritate a patient’s stomach. MicroCoat particles are manufactured with the properties required to be stable when dispersed into liquids. Liquid medicines are easy to take by patients who have difficulty in swallowing tablets and capsules, such as children, older adults and patients with diseases that affect swallowing (e.g. stroke and Parkinson's disease). This project will develop MicroCoat CR technology as a robust manufacturing technique that can be easily scaled-up for industrial production. A new range of microparticles will be developed by carefully designing a process to coat drug particles that provides slow and steady drug release and absorption. The benefits of slow-release tablets and capsules (e.g. reduced dose frequency or side effects) will be achievable with liquid medicines. These features set MicroCoat CR apart from previous attempts to produce liquid slow release medicines and make such products a clinical reality that benefits patients.
