Mobile Game to Develop Social Skills for Autistic Children in Egypt

"Our project addresses the social development and inclusion of autistic children in Egypt.As a lower-middle income country, Egypt lacks adequate government and institutional support provisions for autistic children. This leads the vast majority of autistic children to stay, and be cared for, at home. It severely affects their social and behavioural development, education, and future prospects of employment and independent living. It also places a significant financial burden on their families, causes mental health problems, often leads their mothers to quit employment, and forces social exclusion on the entire family.We used mobile technology to develop a product that provides an effective, affordable and accessible tool to help autistic children develop their social communication skills, irrespective of their gender, geographic location, religion, financial means or social status.Our feasibility study project aims to explore the demonstration of our product in Egypt, in partnership with Egyptian partners, and to verify the effectiveness, desirability and viability of our product in Egypt.During the feasibility study we shall conduct human-centred design to understand and account for user needs, market research to understand the Egyptian market and technical feasibility to design the demonstration project in an effective way. The main outputs of the feasibility study are a demonstration plan, a business plan and an impact framework.Our project is envisaged to have a positive impact on the well-being, welfare, and economic development of autistic children and their families in Egypt. By providing an effective social communication training tool, and developing the children's social communication skills, our project will contribute to achieving SDG 4: Quality Education, through providing an accessible educational and skills training tool to vulnerable autistic children, and ensuring equal and inclusive access for all. It will also contribute to achieving SDG 3: Good Health, through promoting mental health and well-being of autistic children and their care-giving families. In particular, our project will have a positive impact on social inclusion of autistic children and their families, and on gender equality among autistic girls and care-giving mothers. It also promotes economic development through enabling care-giving mothers to return to work, and equipping autistic children with necessary skills that improve their future prospects in employment and indepenhdent living."
