There has been a considerable research into chemicals in breath linking their presence, orexcess, with disease or disorders. There are over 30 diseases where research has made thislink. Diagnosis is often dependent on the analysis of blood, saliva,urine and stools. It can beinvasive or unpleasant for the individual, and there can be significant Laboratory delays inobtaining results. A point of care hand held device capturing breath for speedy diagnosis andmanagement of disease has high potential for medical and home use.Breath tests are currently available for lactose intolerance and for management of asthmainflammation. The equipment is expensive and bulky limiting uptake.Our initial market research has indicated that elevated levels of ammonia are associated withnine different conditions. Our aim is to develop a hand held breath device using anelectrochemical sensor to measure ammonia, as the first of a range of breath diagnosticdevices.Two attractive indications for breath ammonia are measuring the effectiveness of dialysis inend stage renal disease, and in the diagnosis of Helicobacter Pylori infection.This proposal will carry out in depth analysis of these potential markets including marketreferencing with consultants and General Practioners.
