The project comprises an assessment of the commercial viability of a range of conceptualtechnologies that would facilitate precision air drop* of smaller packages than is currentlyfeasible or cost effective. Current precision air drop systems are focused on large payloads(always greater than 100kg and usually greater than 1000kg) that suit traditional military usecases. In this project we will assess concepts for much smaller and much lower cost systems,looking at the market fit of these concepts against a range of commercial opportunities. Eachof the potential cost reductions and performance enhancements is linked to innovations thatwe believe are unique and hence probably worthy of appropriate protection.The project that we will take the form of a detailed assessment that will comprise:(i) market research that considers the current market for the proposed systems(ii) market testing of the notional performance/price points for the proposed systems(iii) analysis of competing technologies and potential competitors in the market(iv) a determination of the protection opportunities for the intellectual property potential thatis believed to exist(v) a detailed assessment of costs, timescales and funding requirements going forward and arecommendation regarding next stepsA successful outcome at the end of this project will allow us to attract further investment toenable the following activities:(i) Protection of intellectual property(ii) Engineering work to develop a proof of concept system(iii) Further market engagement with a view to finding potential trial customers* Precision Air Drop systems supply loads dropped from aircraft by parachute. Theparachutes feature control systems to allow them to be steered to specific locationsautomatically. The systems are in wide military use for the delivery of large payloads ofsupplies to ground forces.
