MovieMatrix: Unlock, Explore, Share the power of Big Data in Film and Television

MovieMatrix™ is a web application and set of software tools that can unlock the hiddenpotential of the multitude of behind-the-scenes data created during film and TV production. Itwill allow users – whether they are filmmakers of film fans – to explore that data, guided by aunique set of interactive features, giving them “access all areas” to the production process,and to share whatever interests them with colleagues, fellow filmmakers and friends.MovieMatrix simultaneously addresses two key challenges. One, how can film and TVproducers streamline data handling and storage in a cost-effective way, allowing real-timeupdating and sharing? Two, how can film and TV distributors enrich their consumers’viewing experience by offering online behind-the-scenes access? MovieMatrix solves bothproblems in one innovative solution, an end-to-end application that both optimises datahandling and facilitates interactive sharing.The purpose of the SMART project is to research the demand for MovieMatrix from both filmproducers and distributors. To this end, we have partnered with four key industry players.Working Title, the largest and most successful UK production company; Curzon Cinemas, theleading independent distributor and cinema owner; BFI, the lead organisation for film in theUK and distributor of Lottery funds; BBC, the leading provider of public broadcasting in theUK.Building on those partnerships, we will evaluate MovieMatrix both through in-depthinterviews and nationwide surveys.
