Every 10 seconds someone in the UK is having a potentially life threatening asthma attack.Asthma attacks kill 3 people each day and the UK has amongst the highest death rates fromasthma in Europe from a patient population of approximately 5.4 million.Most tragicallymany of these deaths and serious attacks could be prevented, since effective drugs areavailable to control the condition.Managing asthma is complex since patients are not constantly symptomatic and managementplans include increasing medication dose during symptomatic periods and reducing the doseto baseline levels following resolution of exacerbations. Patients often become symptomaticgradually, accommodate deterioration and do not increase steroid dose early enough to avoida crisis attack.Anaxsys has developed proprietary sensor technology that detects the moisture in breath anduses the shape of the breath profile to detect asthma.The objective of this project is to research the market for a monitoring device that can helppatients to improve the management of their asthma, leading to a reduction in asthma attacksthat lead to hospitalisations and increased mortality. The study seeks to understand the issuessurrounding patient monitoring of asthma, including compliance issues and to establish ifdevice design can improve compliance.Questions that the market research will address include:Do GPs see a place for a monitoring device that detects changes in asthma status and providesguidance for patients (via a traffic light system?) to titrate their steroid dose?Can patients use the Anaxsys device and see a potential benefit for the control of their asthma.Which features are desired by patients from a series of device options.We will also seek views from GPs, patients and NHS purchasing on potential pricing for thedevice and explore the potential cost benefit to the NHS.
