Severe weather is the major cause of power outages in many countries including the UK andcosts the economy billions of pounds a year. Moreover, since power production fromrenewables depends on weather conditions, it suffers from irregular, intermittence andunpredictable circumstances. Therefore, increasing the resilience and reliability of the grid inthe face of the weather conditions is vital. The project aims to study, assess and prove thecommercial feasibility of a newly developed Condition Monitoring technology for Smart Gridapplications based on meteorological data. The unique feature of this technology is its noveldata analysis technique and the associated control system in taking into account the regionalmeteorological data together with other conventional monitoring signals to control the powersystem operation in response to the weather conditions and hence protect the SG sub-systemsand customers from long outages by undertaking predictive and targeted decisions andemploying asset management strategies to increase availability of critical components.
