ROLI is a design-led technology startup that is about to ship its first product, the multi-awardwinningSeaboard GRAND. Our mission is to empower people through intuitive technology,developing interfaces that expand the bandwidth of human-computer interaction.BeatHive is a new type of digital music sequencer designed for easy compatibility withcomputers and tablets. It takes two converging product categories, electronic drum kits andsequencers (both popular music products with growing markets) and integrates them into asingle modular system featuring our proprietary SEA Interface technology and an entirelynovel design. SEA technology, combined with a series of further technological innovationsrequired to realise BeatHive’s breakthrough form factor, will enable us to create a product thatis lightweight, portable, intuitive and accessibly priced, while also offering richness ofinteraction and an unprecedented level of functionality.Our launch of the Seaboard GRAND met with global enthusiasm, with thousands of peoplefrom almost 100 countries registering for the chance to pre-order one of the first 88 Seaboardsin the space of two weeks. BeatHive will build on the technological innovation of theSeaboard, and will add value to our existing SEA technology by combining a number ofadditional functionalities.This application seeks funding for a proof-of-concept R&D project to enable us to conductresearch into the feasibility and long-term possibilities of the BeatHive project. Our keyobjectives are: (1) to verify the technological feasibility of the product by solving thefundamental electronic, mechanical and software engineering challenges, enabling us (2) tobuild a basic prototype, which we can use (3) to assess the commercial potential through usertrials and (4) to explore options for manufacturing and assembly.
