The proposed solution will be the development of an intelligent cloud-based recruitment and communication platform for connecting healthcare professionals, scientists, research nurses, trial coordinators and patients for better knowledge access and transfer on clinical trials.Called “www.YourTreatmentChoices.com”, the platform allows patients to watch and listen to videos of research doctors explaining the purpose and requirements of individual trials and the facility to engage directly with research teams. The innovativeness of the solution lies within developing an automated screening tool for selecting patients using data mining.Various cases of medical treatments in the NHS no longer prove effective for patients. With average timelines for innovations in the NHS of 17 years, the improvement of access and availability to new treatment trials is vital for increased trials successes and innovations in the NHS. Current trial failures are due to the challenge of recruiting patients resulting in 4 trials out of 10 non-completed. With a patient recruitment target of 125,000 per quarter year by 2014, the market in the UK represents a strong opportunity. The cost of running clinical trials in the UK amounts up to 30% of pharmaceutical companies’ drug development budget, consuming approximately 40% of total clinical trial costs with time being a prime cause for 70% of clinical trial failures. While enabling pharmaceutical companies to significantly reduce the cost and time of clinical trials, the platform will encourage patients to take an active role in managing their own disease through better education means about their conditions and treatment availability. With this the project will not only help to meet patient recruitment targets on time and costs but improve the opportunities of new treatments and medical research in the UK. The project will deliver direct value to the pharmaceutical sector, benefiting the overall UK healthcare research and economy.
