The project aim is to develop the most advanced wireless based street lighting controlsystem which will automatically dim lights and include the latest smart meteringtechnology. The wireless network will automatically configure, extend as lamps areinstalled and self heal in the event of a fault. In addition the system will remotelymonitor individual lamp power consumption, lamp efficiency and report faultsautomatically to a central Data Centre. The syst~m will be scalable and controlmultiple networks with each network typically comprising of 500 street lamps butcapable of larger networks up to 2500 lampsThe project output will consist of three main components. A small Wireless LampController for fitting to the top of each street lamp which will replace the light sensornormally found for controlling a street light. The Wireless Controller will have theability to switch the lamp on and off and also dim the lamp automatically using thelatest dimmable ballasts (starters). The Lamp Controller will be designed with lowcost smart metering technology and monitor the power consumption of the lamp,quality of power supply and other performance parameters. In addition the LampController will communicate via other lamps in daisy chain fashion to the wirelessGateway. The Wireless Gateway will be of similar enclosure design to the LampController but will be fitted with a GPS/GPRS module and light sensor. The Gatewaywill act as the master controller for the complete network of lamps and issue groupon/off/dim commands over the network and gather data from the individual lampcontrollers. Data will be transferred via the GPRS/GSM module to a hosted server toprovide a Central Data Centre with web based real time viewer and query facility.
