Enabling increased recycled tyre crumb content in 'safety surfaces'

EU production of tyres for 2011 was 302 million units weighing ~4.8 million te. After wear, the weight available to be recycled is ~3 million te. Numerous tyre recycling technologies and several applications exist for tyre recyclate. The main method is mechanical recovery producing tyre crumb & powder. Some of this crumb is coloured using water based emulsion systems that have relatively poor durability and a limited colour range and brightness. We recycle tyres into crumb and use them for sports & safety surfaces. For applications where bright/vivid colours with high durability are required, then virgin, coloured compounds of EPDM are often used. However, our new idea is to use a modified colour coating treatment for recycled rubber crumb that will give us much greater colour durability, wider colour range and more vivid colours & brightness.
