Co-North is an innovative and entrepreneurial solution to the challenges arising from social isolation and ageing populations, centred around the development of co-housing communities in the UK. Co-Housing, a form of group living which clusters individual homes around a ‘common house’ with shared space and amenities, is based on mutual support, self-governance and active participation. Physically, it is designed to promote easy social interaction among its members and is a way of living both ‘apart and together’ with a collaborative group of neighbours who know each other and sign up to certain values. They work to develop the social capital that creates and maintains a sense of community.In recognition that a sense of community does not ‘just happen’ merely from putting people together and that group cohesion requires specific capacity building if groups are to function well and harmoniously, Co-North will provide an institutional framework that works to support local forming groups in the development of the...
