Research activity in some areas of the human genome is quite intense, while other regions, like chromosome 20 are contrastingly inactive. These differences arose because research activity, early in the worldwide effort to characterize the human genome, is directed by interest in specific genes or diseases that have thus far been identified. The purpose of this workshop will be (1) to identify those scientist with a real, or potentially serious, interest in chromosome 20; (2) to promote, early on, international interactions between groups working on this chromosome; (3) to identify specific resources that need to be developed to promote work on this chromosome; and (4) to summarize, collate, and distribute resources and information on chromosome 20.
