Dr Sara Garcia Santamaria will carry out a fellowship to examine politicians' social media performances as a way of understanding theimpact of a mediatized digital society on political communication. More precisely, this proposal explores populist leaders' constructions of "authentic" affective communities through digital storytelling, and how these practices got to permeate everyday political communication. The project is interested in exploring the mainstreaming of populism and, particularly, "other populisms": populist performances beyond supposedly pure forms of male, right-wing, political outsiders. Populism here is understood in a performative fashion, rather than a set political communication style. Therefore, populism can permeate politics as usual, configuring different levels of populist hybridization and performed distance/closeness from the people. The fellowship will be carried out at University of Huddersfield, department of Media Dr Sara Garcia Santamaria will carry out a fellowship to examine postdigital political performances as a way of understanding the impact of a mediatized digital society on political communication. More precisely, this proposal explores populist leaders' constructions of "authentic" affective communities through digital storytelling, and how these practices got to permeate everyday political communication. In other words, the project is interested in exploring the mainstreaming of populism and, particularly, "other populisms": populist performances beyond supposedly pure forms of male, right-wing, political outsiders. Populism here is understood in a performative fashion, rather than a set political communication style. Therefore, populism can permeate politics as usual, configuring different levels of populist hybridization and performed distance/closeness from the people. Methodologically, it draws on production and reception studies through multimodal postfoundational and visual rhetorical analysis and ethnographic work.
