'Shakespeare and the Irish Actor' (SIA) brings together and evaluates the contributions and achievements of Irish actors over hundreds of years of Shakespearean performance and interpretation on screen and stage in Ireland, North America, and Europe. The first project of its kind - it makes visible an unrecognised performance archive and a hidden history - SIA will allow the researcher, Dr Emer McHugh (EMcH), to pursue a 24-month postdoctoral fellowship at Queen's University Belfast (QUB) supervised by Shakespeare film scholar, Prof. Mark Thornton Burnett (MTB). The fellowship will permit EMcH to extend her skills and historical reach, gain experience in a department of English and acquire expertise in writing about film, enabling her to flourish as an interdisciplinary scholar demonstrably capable of working in multiple academic fields. The fellowship will enhance EMcH's profile as a leading international scholar, dramatically increasing her competitiveness in the job market. Unique research training/visits in the Kenneth Branagh Archive, QUB, and the Queen's Film Theatre, QUB, will furnish EMcH with additional experience of archive and cinema environments. Finally, EMcH will bring singular competencies, knowledge and abilities to QUB and will produce world-leading outputs, including a monograph, a co-edited collection, a website, and a database, which will be creatively disseminated within academia and beyond.
