The aim of the research is to improve the practice of forensic anthropology-the analysis of the human skeleton in legal contexts, such as crime scene investigations and humanitarian responses-through changing our ethical approaches and critically examining our place in social and political narratives. The goal of forensic anthropology is to serve the living by analysing the dead, but unfortunately, forensic anthropologists are not always equipped to do so because of shortcomings in our methods and procedures. In fact, the findings of this research demonstrate that even in distinct contexts, forensic anthropologists often grapple with similar social and political issues that impact everyone in the process-from the families of missing and unidentified persons, to the organisations administrating the programmes, to the forensic practitioners themselves. Without a clear understanding of these difficulties, and therefore without a way to overcome these difficulties, forensic anthropologists cannot effectively account for ethical issues in their work. This has tangible, and often traumatic, outcomes for the very people we are attempting to serve. It is necessary to change this dynamic by shifting our ethical discussions from reactionary to pre-emptive. It is possible to reconceptualise this paradigm through an intersectional approach, which is a theoretical model developed in Black feminist academia that accounts for the unequal systems we function within and highlights the concomitant problems many individuals face within these systems. Through an intersectional approach, we can begin to address the systematic ways in which our methods and procedures let some people fall through our investigative cracks, especially due to ethnic, economic, political, and gender inequalities. Disseminating this research alongside a practical model for addressing these systematic problems is crucial to begin to shift our paradigm. Through the publication of this research and the development of an intersectional handbook for forensic practitioners, we can make these fundamental changes. This important effort will also be supported through the development of a voluntary network of forensic anthropologists who will participate in open discussions with the public and sign-post individuals in need of forensic services to relevant resources. The Forensic Anthropology Intersectional Roundtable (FAIR) will play a critical role in improving transparency and public outreach within the field.
