People living with dementia, (our beneficiaries) often struggle to come to terms with and adjust to their diagnosis. This can impact negatively on quality of life for people living with dementia. Health and community workers (our users) often lack the training and resources to best support people with this emotional adjustment. We have developed the Living Well with Dementia (LivDem) post-diagnostic course - an evidenced based eight week course delivered by health and community workers to provide a safe, structured space to support people to talk about and adjust to their diagnosis. The UWE team provide a LivDem facilitator training programme to teach and support health and community workers at home and abroad to deliver the course. The programme consists of 4 x 2 hour weekly online sessions, a follow up hour support session, access to the LivDem website, regular newsletter and ongoing consultancy support. We need to find a sustainable approach to continue providing the training programme and the capacity to keep up with demand for the training. As the number of people living with dementia is projected to be 1.7 million in England and Wales by 2040, we want to find a solution that will enable more health and community workers to be trained to deliver the LivDem course. ARC Accelerate funding will allow us to explore the potential solutions to address this problem with our customers and users. The programme will provide us with much needed new skills and knowledge in business and entrepreneurship. During the programme we will engage with our key stakeholders both in NHS and non-NHS services to develop our venture idea; a 'train-the-trainer model hosted by a social enterprise or licenced to a training company. We will also talk with colleagues in other universities who provide training programmes to learn from their experiences.
