Recent studies have noted that trimethoprim blocks sodium channels in the nephron resulting in impaired potassium excretion. Retrospective clinical studies in AIDS patients have noted that high dose therapy with sulfamethoxasole/trimethoprim was associated with increases in serum potassium concentration and discontinuation of the drug resulted in a decrease in serum potassium concentration. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of trimethoprim on potassium balance in normal control subjects. In addition, the effect of this drug on the renin- angiotensin-aldosterone axis will be evaluated.
