The purpose of this core is to identify, select and mentor investigators of multicultural backgrounds interested in research on the health of minority elders and develop an information infrastructure for transferring information on issues related to the health of minority elders to local community based organizations and researchers nationally. Previous research by project investigators has shown that building the capacity for research in community based organizations is an effective approach to improving the quality of research on minority populations. Investigators leading pilot studies will benefit from the community linkages and opportunities to disseminate their findings widely through multiple means. The specific aims of this core are to: (1) Work with the Community Liaison Core to develop relationships with community based organizations which will encourage trust of research, insure a sample for prospective research projects, and act as a on-site resource for consultation and advice on how to conduct culturally- sensitive research in the community; (2) Develop a cadre of young minority and nonminority investigators interested in the development of health, health promotion and health intervention research among urban African American elderly populations; (3) Select and nurture 14 pilot research projects over the five year grant period and participate in the development of investigator initiated applications as part of the process; and (4) Work with the Measurement Core to develop effective information transfer infrastructures that will provide opportunities for the development of research knowledge in conducting research on health status, health promotion and health interventions among urban African American elderly.
