This project aims to address the pressing environmental impact of plastics in the automotive industry. Plastics currently account for a significant 20% of a typical vehicle, leading to recycling challenges and contributing to environmental pollution. With over 15 million vehicles sold annually in Europe, the potential for positive change is enormous, focusing on the transformative potential of compostable bioplastics as a sustainable alternative.Through a strategic partnership with a leading automotive moulder, serving major manufacturers such as VW, BMW, and Toyota, we are embarking on an ambitious journey. Our goal is to explore the feasibility of using mechanically recycled poly lactic acid (PLA) for interior visible parts in automobiles.Central to our project is an extensive series of tests, including mechanical, physical, durability, and decomposition analyses of PLA-based blends. We aim to meet industry standards, particularly those set by one major customer, to unlock the commercial viability of compostable bioplastics for automotive applications.Our approach goes beyond conventional methods. By employing specialised testing, expert experiment design, and cutting-edge analytical equipment, we seek to enhance and optimise the material's properties. A deep understanding of polymer chemistry and material physics is key to meeting the automotive sector's demanding performance requirements. Our research promises to drive material advancements that surpass 'off the shelf' options. By making compostable bioplastics a viable and sustainable choice for automotive interiors, shifting towards greener practices across the industry. We envision our work inspiring broader adoption of compostable bioplastics, fostering a sustainable and responsible manufacturing
