MRC:Jonathan Gamwell:MR/N013468/1The UK-Canada doctoral exchange scheme will provide the opportunity to further investigate whether a particular type of fatty acid, called fatty acid hydroxy-fatty acids (FAHFA), that are produced by the fat stores in the human body play an important role in risk of developing disease like type 2 diabetes. In diseases like type 2 diabetes, the control of how fatty acids are released from fat depots in the body fails to work properly. Additionally, there is often inflammation as a symptom of the diseases which causes cells to not function properly. In this work I will be focussing predominantly on two aspects. One is determining if FAHFAs have an effect the way fat tissue released fatty acids into the blood. The other is determining whether they have any impact of decreasing the risk of inflammation in the body. Over the course of the exchange I will learn and develop the techniques required to perform these studies.
