Our research institutes provide leadership and coordination of multi-disciplinary research in areas of strategic strengths at The University of Manchester. The Manchester Environment Research Institute (MERI) provides this for environmental research, and together with sister institutes, provides leadership to deliver solutions to many of the challenges affecting our planet. Our NERC funded environmental research is housed in a number of departments across all 3 of our faculties, most notably in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, the School of Environment, Education and Development, and the Division of Biological Sciences. However, wider activities in environmental research relevant to NERC exists across campus, showcasing our interdisciplinary efforts. The MERI Director will be the responsible "owner" for the NERC Discipline-hopping fund. The fund will be administered by the MERI and SF support teams. This will include providing support to the Director to efficiently and effectively administer the fund from the announcement to final reporting. The Sustainable Futures Platform Management Board will provide oversight of the management of the Fund at the University. The MERI Director will report progress of the fund to the Board at its regular meetings. The SF Platform will host an event shortly after the fund end date to showcase the projects. An internal call is already being developed jointly by the Directors of the Sustainable Futures Platform and MERI, ensuring that it meets the aims above and those laid out in the NERC Guidance.A review panel is being assembled that will include a disciplinarily diverse composition from the Sustainable Futures Platform Board, the MERI Management Group, particularly relying on the Challenge leads whose role it is to promote the inter-disciplinary foci of the Platform, and key members of relevant Departments. The ambition is to start the fund on 1st December 2022.At the University of Manchester, we are committed to diversity and Inclusivity in all that we do. The PI will take direct oversight of Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Accessibility (EDIA) matters and will champion EDIA as a central aspect of this call. To ensure that eligible staff have equal access to the opportunity, the draft call will be reviewed by EDIA Committee representatives from both the School of Environment, Education and Development (Humanities) and the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences (Science and Engineering)The review panel will be appointed to ensure balance of gender, and ethnic diversity and reflect a range of career stages. Members of the EDIA Committees of SEED and DEES will be included on the panel. Consideration of part-time working, limited hours working and flexible approaches to work will be made in the selection and implementation of awards.Protected characteristics monitoring will be undertaken by the MERI administrative team and reported against the statistics for the sector and the research areas at the University of Manchester.
