Multisensory and configural processes in tracking moving targets

In busy scenes, our object tracking ability helps us keep our minds on the objects of greatest importance, such as oncoming cars. Tracking thus provides a key link between cognition and the sensory world. Experiments in this study will reveal how information from different senses and the two cerebral hemispheres are coordinated, to bring the limited resources of cognitive processing to bear on the objects of greatest importance. Rather than tracking operating via independent spotlights on objects, this project will show how the configuration of objects is used to keep all the spotlights on target. The role of this configural process across the senses and cerebral hemispheres will shed further light on the architecture of our mind's link to the outside world.
