The Astrophysics group at UCL is involved in using world-class, ground-based telescopes to carry out research in several areas. We study how exoplanetary systems form from clouds of dust and gas, work to detect and characterize mature planetary systems, and also track their signatures over the long term through dynamical processes at later stages of stellar evolution. Group members also study how stars form and die, and especially those systems that explode and contribute large amounts of dust back into the interstellar medium and contribute to the next generation of stars. Galaxy evolution is also a cornerstone of research in the UCL Astrophysics group, and we study both the formation of galaxies at large scales and during the early history of the Universe, as well as how cold gas and dust contributes to the growth and properties of observed galaxies. We participate in DESI-UK, which will observe 30 million galaxies over a wide range of redshifts to measure the accelerated expansion of the Universe and learn about dark energy.
