New technologies for targeted delivery of anti-bacterial agents

In a climate of prevailing antibiotic resistant bacteria, there is a pressing need for new ways to control infectious disease. This project aims to create a novel carbohydrate-based technology for selectively targeting anti-bacterial agents to specific bacterial species, in order to enable the selective eradication of pathogens in mixed microbial populations. Depending on the skills and interests of the student, the project will involve a combination of chemistry, biochemistry, nanoparticle generation and modification, and in vitro microbiology studies. There will also be scope to explore model gut and model organism analyses of potential clinical and commercial relevance. This multidisciplinary project brings together complementary academic and industrial expertise from the John Innes Centre and Procarta Biosystems Ltd.
