This studentship will work with and be supported by CEFAS which works to secure healthy and sustainable marine and freshwater environments so that current and future generations can prosper. This requires investigation and management of:climate change impacts and adaptationmarine planning and environmental licensingsustainable fisheries managementmarine biodiversity and habitatsfish and shellfish health and hygieneemergency response.To support this mission, the student will assist in the acquisition of high quality data on the environment and ecosystems. To improve and increase data CEFAS, NOCS and UoS are developing new sensors such as Lab-on-chip sensors that mix seawater with reagents in microfluidic channels causing an optical response in proportion to target concentration. Of particular interest is application to high accuracy measurement of nutrients and the carbonate (CO2 in water) system. These technologies are becoming mature and are performing routine measurements in the Christchurch estuary, and in the deep sea in research programs. As a proof of concept, the student will integrate nutrient and carbonate sensors into the CEFAS SmartBuoys (which are autonomous systems are moored, automated, multi-parameter recording platforms used to collect marine environmental data http://www.cefas.defra.gov.uk/our-services/monitoring-and-mapping/autonomousmonitoring/smartbuoys.aspx) and adapt the sensors for this target platform and CEFAS applications. This will enable rigorous performance analysis to provide evidence for wider uptake in further programs.
