Primary breakup modelling with Coupled Level-Set Volume of Fluid (CLSVOF). The atomization of liquid fuel in an aircraft engine plays a key role in the combustion process, affecting the efficiency of the combustion process, emission of pollutants and stability of the system. However it is very difficult to study this process in the high temperature and pressure environment of the aircraft gas turbine system, therefore numerical simulation of this has a key role to play. This project will use a 'Coupled Level Set Volume of Fluid' (CLSVOF) CFD method for unstructured meshes developed in previous projects to simulate the atomization process. Experimental data produced at Loughborough University for the spray produced by a real gas turbine fuel injector under lab conditions will be used to validate the simulation method which will in turn be used to provide further understanding of the physical processes happening in the experiment. The conditions in the 'numerical experiment' can be changed to those in the engine at operating conditions and this will allow investigation of how the trends seen in the lab tests will relate to those seen at engine conditions.
