Chinoiserie outside China, 1945-present. How have mainstream cultural images contributed to the formation and development of British Chinese Identity?

This study investigates how mainstream representations of Chinese styles, objects, and people in the form of fashion and dress have been experienced in the Chinese diaspora in Britain from 1945-present. It considers how fashion and dress has contributed to the identity-formation of British Chinese people, using oral histories to research how clothing has affected the experiences of Chinese migrants and their descendants. It investigates the concept of cross-cultural dressing, analysing Orientalist tendencies, and the use of clothing as a tool of cultural assimilation.
