This project will investigate the feasibility and potential of advanced data fusions techniques to enhance the performance of electromagnetic methods for humanitarian landmine detection. Initially, the project will focus on a combination of multi-frequency metal characterization, ground penetrating radar and tracking the position of handheld detectors to sub-centimeter accuracy. The intension is to mount the measurement system either in the deminer safety helmet or on the stem of the detector to provide real-time mm positional information alongside ground penetrating radar and multi-frequency metal characterization. As the research progresses, the feasibility of integrated vision, multi-frequency metal detection and GPS method for improved discrimination of targets will be investigated. The student will also work closely with other researcher using metal detection and ground penetrating radar to investigate the efficacy of the integrated solution.
