Intimacy, Dialogue, Power: Creative community practice and imaginations of citizenship in Malawi, India and the UK

This interdisciplinary project works between the fields ofapplied theatre and development studies, examining therelationship between creative drama workshops andengagement with citizenship and political discourse. In thisPractice led Research project, I will work with three casestudy groups during weekly drama workshops: femaleprisoners in Malawi, lower caste rural young people fromBihar, India and refugees in the UK. The project will look atparticipants' experiences within and outside the workshopspace in order to explore the relationship betweenembodiment, learning and dialogue that occurs. Queertheory and research methods are used to articulate thecreative workshop space where normative relations betweenthe self, others and space are suspended, allowing forembodied dialogue to happen. This queering of time andplace allows participants to make visible and examine powerstructures which constitute our world. The experience ofplaying with, embodying and dialoguing with power in thisqueer space impacts participants' actions outside theworkshop space, through political subjectivities and acts ofcitizenship.
