"This project develops a new type of antenna design for THz emitters based upon resonant tunnelling diodes. Conventional systems suffer from the THz wave being trapped within the substrate and subsequently extracted through the use of photonic crystal structures, horn antennas, etc. In this project we utilise the DRA concept to form a box shaped cavity with resonance designed to allow efficient extraction of the THz wave. The student will develop designs through simulation of dielectric resonator devices utilising resonant tunnelling diodes as the oscillating element. This will be collaborative with colleagues from University of Sheffield (DRA design), and Rohm Semiconductors, Japan (manufacturing and applications based aspects). The work will revolve around the development of device fabrication techniques (e-beam lithography, dry and wet etching) and device designs around the DRA concept. The student will develop test capabilities within the laboratory for both electrical and optical characterisation, and look to perform free space optical communications using the devices. "
