Science, Technology and Road Safety in the Motor Age

This project examines new scientific and technical approaches to road safety pioneered in 1960s and 1970s Britain. It explores experiments at the government's Road Research Laboratory (RRL) and elsewhere, into driverless cars, anti-lockbraking, seat belts and anti-pollution work. Two main collections are involved: objects and documentation at the Science Museum; and the papers of the RRL, Ministry of Transport and DSIR at the National Archives. These will illuminate ourunderstanding of the technical development of road safety and the relationship of state, science and the motor industry at a turning point in Britain's love affair with the car.
