Take the cameras to the animals: Film, Television and Mammal Behaviour at the London Zoo, 1955-67

In 1955, the London Zoo collaborated with Granada Television to establish its first resident TV and Film Unit. Thefollowing year, Desmond Morris, a recent graduate from Oxford with a DPhil in Zoology, was employed to head the Unit.Before long Morris was Curator of Mammals at the Zoo and had established the institution's first behavioural researchgroup. I propose to examine this confluence of ethological research in the age of Lorenz and Tinbergen and naturalhistory broadcasting at the dawn of independent television in Britain. My research explores how new visual technologiesbecame research tools in the study of mammal behaviour and how the resulting footage and knowledge travelled throughdiverse audiences and media, and were transformed in the process.
