Conceptualising the Sacred: Catholic Reform and Lay Devotion in Early Modern Venice, 1550 -1650

My project investigates the impact of Catholic reform on the spiritual lives of Laypeople in sixteenth-and seventeenth-century Venice. Building upon my MA dissertation on Catholic confessional identity, my approach eschews the traditional focus on elites and examines the ways in which laypeople were not passive observers of reform from above. Instead, the 'everyday' Catholic was interested and even instrumental in determining the direction that reform took. My project will engage social, cultural and religious historians through its innovative and emphasis on the conceptualisation and use of 'spiritual resources' in everyday lives.
