An ecological approach to post-conflict memory in twenty-first century Basque literary fiction

The purpose of this research is to explore how, through its fundamentally pluralistic approach, anecocritical reading of the treatment of the Basque conflict in contemporary works of literary fiction by Edurne Portela, Fernando Aramburu and Gabriela Ybarra can highlight a greater range of victim experiences thus providing a more inclusive paradigm for both collective remembrance and peaceful coexistence in a post-conflict society. As noted by Ribeiro de Menezes and King (2017), one of the most significant achievements of the memory turn within Spain has been to grant a voice to perspectives silenced or ignored within civic discourse. Notwithstanding this, they also lament the tendency for Spanish Memory Studies to focus too much on the past, at the expense of articulating visions of the future.
