High entropy alloys (HEAs) are a novel class of material that have highly tailorable properties depending on their composition. In addition to the ability to tailor their properties, they can also be functionally graded enabling the joining of two dissimilar materials that would otherwise be difficult or detrimental to place in contact with each-other (a good example being Fe and Al). Coatings are being applied to accident tolerant fuels to improve their behaviour during an accident, for example a loss-of-coolant accident, reducing the corrosion rate and likelihood of fuel failure. This exciting project will highlight the potential for HEA use in water reactors and beyond, collaborating with other institutions, both nationally and internationally, focused on producing accident tolerant fuel cladding materials.This industrially focused project will combine a cutting edge atomic scale modelling methodology with targeted experiments to advance the field. The project will be highly industrially focused with the successful candidate being expected to present within a number of international consortia.
