The aim of this project is to adopt a biospectroscopy-based approach to identify spectral biomarkers for the quality and shelf-life of crops. The student will:-Investigate changes in the spectral fingerprint of tomato at key points in the supply chain, pre-harvest to post-supermarket 'use by date',-Use support vector machine (SVM) chemometrics to automatously classify and predict the quality and shelf-life of tomato at key stages in the supply chain as a tool for the repurposing of crops,-Compare the predictive capacity of the SVM classification model with that of standard biochemical analytical techniques for determining quality,-Assess the robustness of the biospectroscopy-based classification approach derived from tomato in other crops susceptible to spoilage losses in the supply chain.
