The Fascist Temptation: Students and Young Intellectuals in Interwar Romania

My dissertation proposal concerns a group of young Romanian intellectuals, usually referred to as the "1927Generation", who became fascists during the 1930's. Building upon my undergraduate and current MPhil work on thistopic, I intend to use archival materials such as newspapers, personal correspondences and diaries to construct a vividportrait of this intellectual generation and to explain its radicalization. My research will investigate the cohesiveness andthe dynamics of the group, with particular attention given to their personal relationships, as well as to the physical andcultural spaces that shaped their interactions (e.g. the Criterion, a student-run association for cultural and politicaldebates; the offices of newspapers such as Vremea where many of these young intellectuals worked; and Bucharest'sliterary café world). Moreover, I will locate the group within the broader landscape of student political radicalism ininterwar Romania by analysing the academic milieu to which this generation belonged, i.e. the humanities faculties at theUniversity of Bucharest. Of particular interest is the role played by charismatic professors such as Nae Ionescu andNichifor Crainic in the "rhinocerization" of their students.
