This project examines discussions of maternal-filial relationships in late-medieval England in a range of secular and religious texts found in manuscript mescellanies and anthologies. I will explore what this literature says about the influence mothers had, or were permitted to have, over their sons, and how this impacted their gender and identity; what constituted 'bad' maternal influnece; and how these texts interacted with cintemporary religious and social debates about women and motherhood.
