I am particularly interested in theoretical condensed matter physics. This is because it explains how matter works and its behaviour at a fundamental level and it also brings in and combines many other areas of physics and mathematics to solve problems.During my degree I have completed various modules, some of which are related to condensed matter physics and others that are not. This broad range of interests is beneficial as I can draw on knowledge from other areas in order to solve a problem. Also, the linking between areas is one of the reasons I am passionate about condensed matter physics. An example of this was that I undertook a project on the Higgs mechanism in superconductors which explored the concept of gauge theories in condensed matter.I have completed a number of other projects as part of my degree that have allowed me to extend my interest in condensed matter physics. An example of this is that my fourth-year project is on the statistics on one-dimensional Bose gases at finite temperatures. This has taught me new ways to approach problems in this field such as second quantisation and path integrals. Another project I have completed was a predominately numerical project on the forest fire model. This explored many concepts that appear in condensed matter physics, in particular phase transitions, such as scale invariance and the use of mean field theory.As well as these projects, the modules I have completed have also supplemented this interest, whilst also giving me a good background in many areas of physics and mathematics. These include modules on phase transitions, ultracold atoms, superconductivity and a module titled 'Condensed Matter Physics'. These have all been stimulating courses and have encouraged me to want to explore this area of physics further.
