电弱理论对称性破缺机制是当前高能物理上的核心问题之一。标准模型中采用的Higgs机制预言了一个标量粒子(Higgs 玻色子)的存在。除了Higgs的质量在标准模型中是自由参数外,该粒子在强子对撞机上的产生机制和衰变方式都被标准模型精确预言。另一方面,由于与Higgs相关的过程界面都很小,这部分理论还没有得到实验证实。寻找Higgs 粒子是当前强子对撞机实验的重要物理目标之一。由于受到圈图压制,对于质量在100GeV附近的Higgs到双光子衰变道的分支比在0.1%的量级。但是,双光子末态易于观测,而且一旦在这个衰变道发现Higgs粒子,其质量也同时被确定。同时,我们知道标准模型并不完善,对于标准模型的一些自然拓宽可以显著改变Higgs分支比,双光子衰变道可以大大增强。我们计划在D0和ATLAS实验上寻找Higgs双光子衰变。

寻找Higgs粒子, 探索电弱对称性破缺机制是粒子物理近40年来最核心的问题。双光子衰变末态一直被看作是最有希望的强子对撞机上的Higgs发现道之一。最重要的本底是QCD双光子产生过程。目前理论计算还有很大不确定性,所以通常从实验数据中测得。 双光子末态由于本底相对低,末态运动学可以精确测量,是研究初态辐射等QCD效应的重要工具。 我们先后在费米实验室Tevatron对撞机上的D0实验和CERN的LHC上的ATLAS实验上寻找Higgs->gamma gamma信号, 测量双光子QCD产生过程。在ATLAS数据中发现了125 GeV附近的共振峰, 2012年7月4日, CERN召开新闻发布会,公布了"类-Higgs"粒子这一举世瞩目的发现。其中双光子道是最关键的观测道之一。 我们还在更高质量范围寻找引力子的双光子衰变,在一些特定的参数设定下,质量在2TeV以内的引力子在95%的置信度下被排除。
