Its primary supervisor is Dr. Wendy Ugolini at the University of Edinburgh, although Professor Arthur McIvor and Professor Yvette Taylor from the University of Strathclyde will provide additional supervisory expertise.Using original interviews, as well as forty archived testimonies collected by community groups, this project will conduct the first major study into the lives of modern Scottish lesbians. The project will consider how women negotiated their sexuality within both Scottish society and a transnational lesbian subculture between 1970 and 2000. A broad range of lesbian experience will be recovered including women from rural, working-class, and BME backgrounds. The historiographical context of such research is as follows. Since the 1980s historians have begun to uncover the history of British lesbianism. However their publications remain remarkably Anglo-centric, particularly concerning the period after 1945. In both academic and popular accounts the lesbian experience outside of London and the south of England is rarely even referenced. The effect of this has been to mute the experiences of lesbians in other parts of the UK by assuming that regional cultures played no active role in their sexual histories. In Scotland's case a distinct 'queer' culture has been identified by Jeff Meek in his work on gay men. Although Scottish lesbians were never criminalised, unlike their male counterparts, Meek's study raises questions about how women interacted with a particularly 'homophobic' presbyterian culture. The project will explore this suggestion and investigate the distinctiveness of Scottish lesbianism more generally. While expanding the geographical boundaries in which lesbianism has traditionally been situated, this project will also build on wider discussions about 'homosexual self-making' in twentieth-century Britain. Within lesbian history, both Laura Doan and Rebecca Jennings have highlighted the significance of collective lesbian identities to women in the inter-war and post-war periods. They have shown how women both used and contested these identities to articulate and establish their own homosexuality. While Doan and Jennings were concerned with identities which pre-dated the relatively recent category of 'lesbian', the project develops their work by reflecting on Scottish women's negotiations of the modern lesbian identity which arose after 1970. Intimately connected to a transnational Gay Liberation movement, the emergence of modern lesbianism raises a new set of questions about how women were shaped by highly political and visible lesbian politics. In sum, this project will be the first major study into the lives of modern Scottish lesbians and the first piece of research to consider regional difference within the history of British lesbianism. By exploring Scottish lesbians' identity formation between 1970 and 2000, it will also push discussions surrounding the making of modern lesbianism to the end of the twentieth century. The project's contribution will be particularly valuable because of its commitment to involving a diverse range of Scottish lesbians. So far British lesbian history has largely limited itself to the study of white, middle-class women. By including alternative narratives of rural, working-class, and BME lesbians, the project will potentially complicate the established frameworks by which scholars have hitherto examined the subject. Outside of the project's historiographical contribution, its fieldwork will be deposited at the University of Edinburgh's Sound Archive. While the archive contains a very rich oral history collection, it currently has no evidence of Scotland's LGBT+ community. A lesbian archive will add a new 'queer' dimension to Edinburgh's collection while allowing future scholars to access an invaluable record of Scottish social history.
