Art and artistic practice in the art museum: how do these support creative learning within the primary school?

The aim of the research is to identify the strengths and weaknesses, in relation to supporting teachers to develop a visual arts-led pedagogy, of each strand of Tate's learning programme (immersive professional learning for teachers; supported school visits and artist produced resources; and participation in artist-led workshops and projects). The objectives to achieve this aim are:- To establish teachers' desired outcomes from participation in learning programmes- To explore how teachers and gallery educators understand the transference of knowledge of visual arts-led pedagogy- Identify if / how pedagogy learnt from participation in learning programmes is used in the classroom- The impact of this acquired pedagogy on the visual arts learning of pupils- The impact of this pedagogy on the learning of pupils across the curriculum- To explore whether this visual arts-led pedagogy and participation in the learningThe programme contributes to the self-perceived cultural capital of pupils and teachers. This research will enrich the current literature by focusing on primary teachers and students as well as feed into the wider question of the role of art museum education for schools and students.
