My project will analyse the visual evidence from Southern Italy depicting combat scenes from the lateclassical period to the end of the Social War. Despite extensive study by many modern scholars such asEnzo Lippolis (E. Coarelli, 1994, 'Due fregi fittili da Fregellae: un documento storicodella prima guerra siriaca', Ostraka, III, (1), 93-108.) there is still no comprehensive iconographical studyof warfare iconographies from archaeological contexts in Southern Italy. The study will be based on amultidisciplinary approach and include literary sources, material evidence including fragmentary objectsfrom recent archaeological excavations with solid stratigraphic data. Moreover, the spread and circulationof classical iconographies will be examined to assess the process of their adoption by the Roman-Italicaristocracy.
