Experiencing Medieval Craft Practice: New Approaches to Glass Production in Islamic Iberia

Craft practices played a key role in major cultural transactions between the Islamic and Christian worlds in8th to 15th century Iberia. My research will partially reconstruct the 12th century Islamic glass workshop atcalle Puxmarina, Murcia - the only complete medieval example discovered in Spain. Innovativearchaeological experiments will address questions of glass production techniques, furnace stoking and pollutants, combining experience in glass production technology with original ethnographic studies ofcurrent glass practitioners in creative and historical traditions, to illuminate the practice of glassproduction in medieval Iberia, transforming our understanding of relations between medieval craftknowledge and early-modern science.
