Natures of attention in contemporary experimental British poetry

This thesis explores how contemporary experimental British poets have conceived of attention. Itexamines three groups of poets who use language, typography, page space, collage and paratexts ininnovative ways to interrogate how the reader apprehends the poem, and, in turn, how she apprehendsthe poem's subject matter. By situating attention within a network of environmental, phenomenological,aesthetic, textual materialist and philological contexts, this thesis contributes to a wider discussion abouthow modernist poetic practices deconstruct pretensions to objectivity, by continually inviting us to reexamineour faculties of perception and interpretation.
