Through the lens of the British Council for Aid to Refugees' (BCAR) work resettling Ugandan Asian, Chilean, and Vietnamese refugees, this project will study the discursive construction of the refugee Other in 1970s Britain. It will situate the BCAR's use of language and iconography within wider state and media-led debates to examine how refugees became a site for reformulating and advancing narratives of Britishness. By fusing archival sources with oral histories, it will seek to explore how the ideas that rooted institutional representations of refugees were refracted into public opinion.
