This project presents John Akomfrah's audio-visual practice as a singular, sustained effort to think critically about the political potency of experimental filmmaking- specifically, its capacity for exploring British diasporic identity and staging postcolonial interventions. Studying his career with a focus on major works produced for television, cinema and museums, I explore how Akomfrah's essay films use the technique of montage to challenge dominant national narratives and interrogate the relationship between politics and aesthetics.
